Today, US mobile phone company OnePlus unveiled their 2017 flagship device, the OnePlus 5. The new phone is the company’s priciest handset to date, but it provides several high quality, newly included features that may be worth the increase in price.
About The Phone
Featuring on the new device is an updated camera. The phone comes with a dual-camera system made with a primary 16MP f/1.7 and 20MP monochrome sensor. OnePlus has packed these features for the two main reasons that the iPhone 7 device has a similar camera. The first is for a portrait mode that enhances pictures of other people, by blurring the photo around the object that you want to focus. It uses the other sensor for optical zoom, to get a greater zoom when taking photos.
Another of OnePlus’ new features on the phone is the increased power. Similar to other OnePlus flagships before it, the new device is strong with it’s specs. The phone includes a Snapdragon 835 processor, up to 8GB of RAM, and up to 128GB of storage, depending on which unit of the phone you choose. There is no microSD card slot included on the phone, but since OnePlus has included a UFS 2.1 storage included, most users should suffice without the need for secondary storage options.
However, the new OnePlus 5 misses out on a few features commonly seen on 2017 flagship devices. These left-out features include waterproofing and a bezel-less display (both featured on Samsung’s new S8). This means that the company can focus on making the device as perfect as possible. The phone has a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, a fingerprint sensor, a 16MP front facing camera, the lasted version of Android (7.1.1 Nougat) with OnePlus’ OS (OxygenOS). A 3,300 mAh battery with super quick Dash Charging means the device should easily last a long day’s use and be ready for the next day.
Buying The Phone
OnePlus is opening their doors for today to customers who want the new flagship device. To get the new device, you need to use the code “Clearer Photos” at ‘Early Drop’ site found here. The company claims that shipping will start tomorrow (June 21st) with free priority shipping. General sales start on June 27th. Pricing for the highest tier ‘Midnight Black’ model which features 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, comes in at $539; while the slightly lower tier model in ‘Slate Grey’, costs $479 with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.
Having come under previous praise for the OnePlus 3 device, OnePlus should receive a similar reaction despite the raised price, due to the inclusion of new features. Despite this, the phone does not offer as many of the premium features we see in other phones.
